Bruins Weekly Recap 3/23 - 3/29
A positive week for the Bruins, eh? I would say that six out of six points is pretty darn good. This week saw a sweep of the Leafs and a strong effort against division foe Ottawa (who is fading faster than a black t-shirt).
3/25 at Toronto Maple Leafs (6-2 W)
This game was an offensive outburst, which resulted in a lopsided victory for the Causeway kids. It turns out the final game of the season against Montreal proved to be a measuring stick, as the Bruins rallied to earn a point. It doesn't seem like much now, but I'm willing to bet it saved our season. David Krejci had his coming out party in this game, as he tallied a goal and an assist in the absence of team points leader Marc Savard. The Czech was calm, cool and collected, but above all, he was smart. He made all the right passes, played two way hockey (offense and defense) and took the hit if it meant setting up a scoring chance. Now THAT is the kid we drafted. The B's got goals in this one from Murray, Krejci, Sturm, Thornton, Kessel and Reich... now I would consider that balanced scoring! The win produced the momentum which carried into Boston for the second half of the home and home.
3/27 at Toronto Maple Leafs (4-2 W)
In this tilt, the Leafs did play better (maybe because Sundin and Antropov played?) but it mattered little as the Beantowners won the final grudge match of the season between these two squads. Once again, Mr. Krejci had a brilliant game (two assists) filling in for Marc Savard...i t cannot go unnoticed that Savard is the offensive playmaker who allows this team to score. He may be the best passing forward in the NHL (I'll take on all comers who refute that claim). But Krejci has been excellent, which defied my expectations as he looked completely lost on the ice last year as a late season callup and early this season as an injury replacement. Whatever the reason, it's working... go with it! The Bruins got scores in this game from Sturm, Kessel, Murray and Schaefer... no your eyes do NOT deceive you, Peter Schaefer did something productive offensively... (Oy, what a waste of Shean Donovan...).
3/29 vs Ottawa Senators (4-0 W)
This, plain and simple, was a statement game for the B's. It had a lot of meaning for the Sens as well, who are dying down the stretch... quite possibly (IMO) missing the big dance altogether. The Sens did have chances in this game, but the Bruins simply outplayed them, out-hustled them, and any other hockey adjective you can think of. The B's earned TT the goose egg by playing suffocating defense (for a period and a half anyway) and building on their lead the rest of the way. The Bruins now sit ONE point behind the vaunted Ottawainians, a team that started the season 15-2... yeah, re-read that statement: 15 AND 2... one of the best records in NHL history to start a season... Their record in the remainder of the year? JUST above .500 hockey... that's not going to get it done. I blame Ray Emery... he's a bum... I look forward to the second installment next week boy-ohs.
Alright that's it for now, 90 points (7th place) and four more games (including tonight's 6:00 PM showdown against Buffalo) to go, boys... in reference to a great Cars tune... Let The Good Times Roll...
