Bruins Acquire Prospect Marquardt from Blue Jackets
I can't believe I'm writing about the Bruins in the midst of the Celtics' push to the NBA Finals, Patriots OTAs and an ugly 1-5 stretch posted by the Red Sox in their past 6 games, but believer it or not, there's some quite noteworthy news regarding the black and gold to report today. The B's shipped defenseman Jonathan Sigalet to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the rights to 20-year-old forward Matt Marquardt. Marquardt, who appeared in 68 games last season between two teams, finished with 43 goals and 26 assists. He joins fellow Moncton Wildcats (of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) products Martins Karsums, Brad Marchand and Nathan Saunders in the Bruins organization. According to Fluto Shinzawa of The Boston Globe, the 22-year-old Sigalet hit a wall in his development and had fallen down the depth chart due to the progression of fellow blue-liners Matt Lashoff and Matt Hunwick. This could end up being nothing more than a swapping of career AHLers, but it's nice to see the Bruins' front office thinking outside the box on this one and picking up a big winger (6-3, 222 pounds) who looks like can come in and contribute on the fourth line right away. Hockey's Future has a good writeup on Marquardt for those of you interested in researching a bit more on the Bruins' latest acquisition. The B's have until June 1st to sign Marquardt to a new deal, while Sigalet currently has 1 year remaining on his pro contract.
