Manny Reaches Milestone with 500th Career Home Run

ManRam has finally done it. Red Sox Nation has been holding its collective breath as Manny Ramirez struggled through a decidedly un-Manny-like slump during the month of May that saw his average fall from a season-high .370 on April 24th to .289 as of yesterday, but our eccentric and oftentimes peculiar left fielder has launched the 500th homer of his career, depositing a Chad Bradford offering about 15 to 20 rows back in right-center field. In typical "Manny being Manny" fashion, he took his sweet time getting out of the box and beginning his jog 'round the bases, admiring the shot as it soared through the clear, cool Baltimore sky. The specially marked ball will possibly be returned to the slugger (UPDATE, 6.01: Manny has decided to auction the ball off and donate the proceeds to a Boston-area charity), who has all but assured himself of getting into the Hall of Fame thanks to tonight's mammoth milestone blast. Manny becomes the 24th member of the 500 home run club, a striking coincidence given that that's the very same number he wears on his jersey. The sea of red filling the stands at Baltimore's Oriole Park at Camden Yards saluted Manny and his tremendous accomplishment with a prolonged standing ovation, although I'm sure it's nothing compared to the appreciation Manny would have received had he smacked number 500 at Fenway.
