With the 30th Overall Pick, the Boston Celtics Select...
...shooting guard J.R. Giddens out of New Mexico.
Interesting and somewhat unexpected pick here. Bucking the trend of picking freshmen in the first round, the Celtics selected Giddens, a senior who spent his first two seasons playing at Kansas. The Celts passed on guys like Mario Chalmers, DeAndre Jordan, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Ante Tomic, Omer Asik and Nikola Pekovic to select Giddens, so they must have liked what they've seen out of him. The 6-5, 205 pounder from Oklahoma City, OK has improved steadily every season throughout college and posted per-game senior season averages of 16.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals. He was originally projected to go in the second round or not at all due to some off-the-court concerns in regards to his character and maturity. ESPN's Chad Ford explains, "Giddens might have lottery-type talent... Has the talent to be a first-round pick... but scouts are worried about work ethic and attitude."
The negatives are a bit worrisome and shouldn't be overlooked, but this looks to be a high upside pick that could pay off big time in the long run. The Celts apparently went into the draft looking for a shooter behind Ray Allen in the rotation and they may have gotten him. Giddens sounds like a guy worth taking a chance on with the last pick of the first round.
