Red Sox Weekly Recap 7/13 - 7/19
7/13 vs. Baltimore Orioles (2-1 W)
While control continues to be an issue for him, Dice-K (6 IP, 0 ER, 5 BB, 7 K) was able to improved to 10-1 thanks to a relatively solid outing. Jacoby Ellsbury (0-4, 1 BB, 5 left on base) saw his average dip below the .270 mark as he continues to struggle in the leadoff spot. (Word is that Tito is toying with the idea of reverting back to last year's Dusty-Youk 1-2 combo once Papi returns.) J.D. and Dusty (sounds like a country band) accounted for the 2 runs the Sox put up, while Baltimore grabbed a run off Pap in the ninth thanks to an Aubrey Huff single. All in all, a nice way to close out the "first half" of the season.
7/18 at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (11-3 L)
Buchholz (4.2 IP, 8 R, 4 ER, 2 K) looked pretty uneven and it didn't help that the offense could only muster a measly 5 hits to support their young gun. Youk and Manny did their parts with a homer apiece, but things tend to go downhill quickly when you have 6 guys that go hitless. Angels ace John Lackey (7 IP, 3 ER, 2 K) wasn't at his sharpest, but he certainly pitched well enough to come away with the win. The Sox were out of it by the time Buchholz was lifted (thanks, in large part, to an error by fill-in shortstop Alex Cora), but it still wasn't nice to see Javier Lopez give up 3 earned runs in 0.2 of an inning.
7/18 at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (4-2 L)
Sucks when you pitch 8 full and still come away with the loss; just ask Josh Beckett (8 IP, 4 ER, 6 K). Youk had another 2-run homer, but Angels phenom Joe Saunders (6.2 IP, 2 ER, 1 K) was too much for the rest of the lineup to handle. He didn't get the win (which went to reliever Jose Arredondo), but he was quite impressive regardless. Scot Shields escaped the eighth in spite of issuing 2 free passes and giving up a hit and then star closer Francisco Rodriguez ran into a bit of trouble of his own in the ninth. K-Rod gave up a hit and a walk but was able to slam the door shut to earn his league-leading 39th save of the season.
