Hey Jon Gruden, it's pronounced M-A-T-T Light!

In addition to having to up with a pathetically supbar Patriots performance for much of last night, we were also forced to deal with the inane babble of MNF rookie Jon Gruden. Gruden's idiocy may have been overshadowed by Jaws' numerous professions of love for Fred Jackson and Terrence McGee, but there was one thing Gruden did/said that I just couldn't let go.
Not once but twice did the coaching washout refer to offensive tackle Matt Light — you know, two-time Pro Bowler and three-time NFL champion Matt Light — as TODD Light. I'll forgive one slip up because it's not the easiest thing in the world to remember every player's name, but that shit is inexcusable to let it happen again. If there's one thing I ask out of my announcers, it's a bit of competency, but maybe even that is too much to expect.
Some other quick hit observations from Week 1:
- TB looked very mediocre. I wouldn't go so far as to say he looked scared, as Jaws often implied, but he certainly didn't look like the Tom Terrific of old. Equally upsetting was his blaming of wide receivers on shitty throws.
- Speaking of Matt "Please call me Todd" Light, that dude played like shit. Of course, he was going up against a healthy Aaron Schobel most of the game, but still, he hasn't looked that bad since Super BowlXLII.
- On the flip side, Maroney looked pretty solid, at least early on. His 52-yard return to open the game was quite encouraging, and once he learns to quit making unnecessary additional cuts and jukes, he could be good for 15 carries per game.
- Pressure on Trent Edwards got better as the game went along, hopefully a sign that the D got more comfortable with their new formations and a possible sign of more to come.
- The secondary looked like poop early on. Hopefully it's just opening game jitters and they start to mesh a little better going forward. It sure would be nice to see some picks from those guys once in a while.
- 12 catches for both Moss and Welker. Business as usual, great to see.
- Don't read too much into Ben Watson's big game (77 yards, 2 touchdowns). It could just as easily be Chris Baker catching 5 balls and a TD reception next week. Or, more likely, neither will have any sustainable value throughout the season, as is usually the case with a tight end on a Bill Belichick team. Plus, I just don't like Ben Watson.
- Hopefully Jerod Mayo's knee injury isn't serious. Already thin at linebacker, it would be a huge blow to the Pats' D. The initial chatter around the team has it not being as bad as Brady's injury last season.
