Time to pull the plug on Tek

For the second night in a row, Jason Varitek made an unforgivable error behind the plate that cost the Red Sox on the scoreboard. What changed this time around is that Alex Gonzalez (and the umpiring crew) didn't bail his sorry ass out as the Sox fell to the Angels, 4-3.

I've been a Tek supporter for a long time — I will always revere him for the way he went to bat for Bronson Arroyo by trashing A-Rod's shitty play then feeding him some of his trademark All-Star brand catcher's mitt back in '04, and no one has personified what it means to be a member of the Boston Red Sox more than him over the past decade — but this has to stop. Like right now. I understand Francona wanting to be loyal to his guys, especially when the guy in question has been with the team for 12 years, but when it starts costing the team games, something's gotta change. I'm not saying you start V-Mart every night, but enough of this "Varitek has to catch certain guys every time out" bullshit. I'm begging you, Tito.
